"The purpose of the present study is to present for the first time the integral text of the Chanson de Garin, in the version of one definite manuscript: that of ms. 3143 of the Bibliothéque de l'Arsenal, or N. Our study is primarily concerned with the points of difference between the version of N and that of the basic ms. B [Bern 113].
"[T]he researches of Bonnardot, Vietor, Rhode, Hub, Nitter and the researches and editions of E. Stengel, are the onlyones which treat of ms. N in any detail. [Those] of Hub however, are based on the poem of Hervis de Mes; those of Nitter [on] the poem of Herbert de Mes. Bonnardot discussed ms. N at length, his classification being amended by the work of Vietor. Based on mss. E, N, T and v, the study of August Rhode deals with the relation between the poems of Hervis and Garin, but does not undertake to consider the entire poem of Garin le Loherain; the study of N in comparison with T was proposed by Rhode as the subject of a later work which does not seem to have been published.
"Ms. N, indeed, differs from all other known mss. of the Lorraine cycle in that it contains all four branches of the geste, arranged according to the chronological sequence of the events of the narrative: Hervis do Mes, Garin le Loherant, Girbert de Mes, Anseis de Mes. This completeness, for Bonnardot, was one of the most important and distinguishing features of the manuscript. From the announcement of future events in the first folios of the Chanson de Hervis, from the manner in which the Chanson de Garin is joined to the Hervis which precedes and the Girbert which follows it, it is evident that our scribe planned to give a comprehensive narrative of the entire tradition of the Lorrains. This intention explains the rearrangement of episodes and the introduction of new material based on the conflict of Charles (Martel) with Girart de Rossillon as an effort to reconcile the contradictions between the two independent poems  of Hervis and Gari
